New YMG 01 videos Background notes From the players' point of view, this YMG tournament was replacing 3 events that were cancelled following the World Trade Center disaster. Indeed, only this YMG event remained following the cancellation of the fall 2001 events i.e. the US Open, the Pakistan Open and the World Championships that was to be held in India in Dec.. The players came to North America well-rested and ready to fire up on all cylinders. This YMG event was their World Championships, and all dedicated their efforts to the memory of the victims of the 9-11 events. A World Premiere took place in Toronto this fall of 2001, it was the web's first live audio streaming broadcast ever. This initiative from Jean de Lierre and squashlive.com, authorized by John Nimick and sanctioned by the PSA made it possible for tens of thousands of listeners to tune in to the play-by-play broadcast.

"As the Tournament Director, I am thrilled that the YMG Capital Classic has the opportunity to be the first-ever audio webcast squash event," said John Nimick. "The coverage offered by Jean De Lierre is certain to stamp our event as one of the most progressive and pioneering on the PSA World Tour". See other comments posted in the review section.

Alan Thatcher, world renown squash journalist and promoter, was joined in the commentary box by top players and coaches such as David Palmer, Paul Price, Rodney Durbach, Mike Way, Dean Brown and so many more. All contributed their own insights to the incredible squash they saw, and described each point of every match from the round of 16 to the finals. A special thank you to all those whose names are omitted here for lack of space, and who contributed in this memorable premiere.

Only the best 5 matches of the event were selected for your pleasure. All were selected for their excellence, the human drama displayed, and the fierce determination of the players who now dominate the squash scene, and of those who will replace them in the near future. In acquiring these extraordinary videos, you will not only see match highlights, but you will witness every point of every match through the magical lens of the one-eye-monster controlled by De Lierre. The five cameras used by De Lierre on the production set, combined to the hundreds of hours he spent in the editing studio assembling all scenes, one frame at the time, will undoubtedly make this production the best of all times.

  1. JONATHON POWER Vs PETER NICOL
In their near 30 encounters to date, only a handful of matches between these two giants of the sport went the distance, and this was one of them. The YMG spectators witnessed one of the most incredible court battles ever, and De Lierre was there to capture every point of every game. Power kept his head … well at least until the last point, and appeared to dominated attacks after attacks, Nicol ran and ran, and ran again for almost 1 hour and a half, and he finally got to match ball first in the fifth. Then, every spectator in BCE Place stopped breathing, and what followed next will not be forgotten by any whom witnessed it...

  2. JONATHON POWER Vs PAUL PRICE
One of the most incredible match in history. Price, the shot maker, nicked balls by the dozens, Power replied with holds, disguised drops and devastating lengths. The match was extremely physical and the court shook on more than one occasion. The referees had their hands full. The actors were great but, on that day, it is possible that one gave a better performance than the other…. Price made first to 14 with four match balls in the fifth. What happened next was in a way magical for one and nightmarish for the other… An ultimate display of 'mind blowing' squash followed, the crowd went nuts, and BCE Place trembled...

  3. DAVID PALMER Vs LEE BEACHILL
Beachill is the most deceptive and technically accurate player on the tour today. Combined to this 'Power style deception', he strikes the ball in a slicing motions from every court position, taking all pace off it. He baffled Palmer as he had Nicol earlier this year in the British Open quarters. No doubt that Palmer will be ready for this giant killer next time they meet. Beachill is going to the top, he knows it, and so do all other players on the tour. Watch him go!
